How Often Should You Replace a Vitamin C Shower Cartridge?

Short answer: about a month and a half for most handheld cartridges and two to three months for wall-mounted ones, sooner if you shower long or often. These figures come from our own product pages. Treat them as a guide and change a cartridge early rather than late.

What our product pages say

  • Handheld vitamin C cartridges: replace within 45 days, depending on usage. The Neutral (unscented) cartridge says 30 days.
  • Wall-mounted cartridges: replace within 60 to 90 days, depending on usage.
  • 3-in-1 packs: the same interval applies to each cartridge as you use it.
  • Microfiber filter: the filter changes color toward brown depending on your water, about two to three months, and should be checked whenever you check your cartridge.

Our general guide says a cartridge lasts roughly a month of daily showers, so if you shower daily and for a long time, plan on the shorter end.

Why it matters

Vitamin C neutralizes chlorine by reacting with it, and that uses the vitamin C up (see how the chemistry works). Once a cartridge is spent it no longer reduces chlorine. Certified shower filters are tested for capacity over their whole rated life for exactly this reason (more on that).

Signs it is time

  • You are at or past the interval on the product page.
  • The microfiber filter has turned brown.
  • Your water feels or smells different, although smell is an unreliable test for low chlorine levels.
  • A test kit shows chlorine after the filter. A drop-type free chlorine kit, sold for pools and aquariums, lets you compare tap water with filtered water.
