Handheld vs Wall-Mounted vs Rainfall Shower Heads: Which Fits Your Bathroom?

Short answer: pick by where the water comes from and what fits your bathroom. Wall-mounted heads are the simplest swap. Handheld heads add flexibility but need a hose that fits. Rainfall heads need overhead space. Everything below comes from our own product pages, so you can check it there.

Wall-mounted

A wall-mounted head screws onto the shower arm your current head uses. Our installation guide notes that Aroma Sense heads fit the standard half-inch connection used across North America, and the steps are: unscrew the old head, wrap fresh plumber's tape on the threads, hand-tighten the new head, load a cartridge and flush. Our wall-mounted and Jet wall-mounted kits include one head, two microfiber filters and one vitamin C cartridge.

Best for: renters and anyone who wants the simplest change. Trade-off: the spray is fixed where the arm points.

Handheld

Handheld heads (Medium, Large, Prestige and Luxe) come with a head, filters and a cartridge. Our pages warn that handheld heads do not fit every existing hose, and that a hose and bracket may be needed. If your hose is worn or an unusual size, the Aroma Sense hose and bracket fits a standard half-inch arm and is sold separately.

Best for: rinsing a tub, washing hair, cleaning the shower, or keeping spray off sensitive areas. Trade-off: check hose compatibility before ordering.

Rainfall (overhead)

The Rainfall head includes a head, a microfiber filter and a handheld vitamin C cartridge. Our page asks you to make sure your shower can accommodate an overhead rainfall-style head before you buy.

Best for: a broad, gentle wash from above. Trade-off: it needs the right arm and ceiling clearance.

Cartridges differ by type

Handheld and wall-mounted heads use different cartridges, and their stated replacement intervals differ: 45 days for most handheld cartridges (30 for Neutral) and 60 to 90 days for wall-mounted ones, depending on use. See how often to replace them. Order the cartridge that matches your head.
